IPTV EPG Guide: Set Up Your TV Schedule on Firestick in 5 Minutes

EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide — the same grid of show titles and times you'd see on a cable box, just delivered differently. With cable, the guide is baked into the signal. With IPTV, the guide is a separate XML data feed (commonly called XMLTV) that your player app downloads from a URL and matches against your channel list by channel ID.

That's the part people miss: your M3U playlist (the list of channels and stream links) and your EPG data (the schedule) are two different files from two different addresses. Adding the playlist gets you live channels. It does nothing for the guide. If your app shows channels but the guide row is empty or says "No Data," it's not a bug — you simply haven't added the second URL yet.

Most players, including TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro, have a dedicated EPG URL field separate from the playlist field. Firestick's native approach is different again, and we cover that further down.

Log into your Viking IPTV member account the same way you did to get your playlist or Xtream Codes login. Your account panel lists your connection details: server address (or M3U URL), username, password, and — separately — an EPG URL (sometimes labeled "XMLTV URL" or "Guide URL"). If you're on Xtream Codes-style credentials rather than a plain M3U link, most Xtream panels also expose the EPG as its own endpoint you can copy directly.

Copy that EPG URL exactly as shown — no trailing spaces, no missing characters. A single dropped character is the single most common reason a guide fails to load after setup, and it looks identical to a server-side outage from inside the app, which sends people troubleshooting the wrong problem.

TiviMate handles EPG better than almost any other Firestick app, which is why it's the recommended player if guide accuracy matters to you (sports fans checking kickoff times, especially). Open TiviMate, go to Settings, then Playlists, and select the playlist you're already using for Viking IPTV.

Inside that playlist's settings, look for the EPG option — TiviMate lets you attach an EPG source to a specific playlist rather than applying one guide globally, which matters if you ever run more than one service. Choose "Add EPG source," paste the EPG URL from your Viking IPTV account, and save.

Give TiviMate a minute to download and parse the XMLTV data — for a full multi-day guide this isn't instant. Back out to the channel list and the guide row should populate with real show titles and times. IPTV Smarters Pro usually pulls EPG automatically when you log in with Xtream Codes-style credentials (server, username, password) rather than a plain M3U link, because the EPG is bundled into that connection type. If you set up your account that way and the guide is still blank, open the app, go to Settings, then Playlist Settings, select your added playlist, and check for an EPG URL field — paste your Viking IPTV EPG URL there manually.

If you connected via M3U URL instead of Xtream login, Smarters Pro treats the guide as a separate add: Settings > EPG Settings (or Playlist Settings, depending on your app version) has a field to paste the XMLTV link directly.

After saving, force-close and reopen the app once. Smarters Pro caches guide data aggressively, and a fresh cold start is often what makes a newly added EPG source actually appear against your channels instead of sitting unused in the background.

If you're not using a dedicated IPTV app and instead loaded your channels through a generic Firestick M3U/media player, the cleanest method is to skip a separate EPG field entirely and combine both URLs into one playlist load — many native and lightweight players accept an `epg=` parameter appended to the M3U URL, or a distinct settings field labeled simply "XMLTV" rather than "EPG."

Check your specific app's settings menu for anything called XMLTV, TV Guide URL, or Program Guide before assuming it doesn't support one — the label varies more than the feature does. Every mainstream Firestick IPTV player supports EPG in some form; it's rarely the app that's the limitation, it's finding where the field is hidden.

If your player genuinely has no EPG field at all, that's a sign it's a bare-bones player not built for daily use — worth switching to TiviMate or Smarters Pro, both covered above, rather than living without a schedule.

Stale or frozen guide data almost always means the app cached an old XMLTV pull and hasn't refreshed. In TiviMate, go to the playlist's EPG source settings and there's a manual refresh option — use it rather than waiting for the automatic schedule. In Smarters Pro, a full app restart usually forces the same refresh.

"No Data" on specific channels while others work fine points to a channel ID mismatch, not a broken EPG feed — we explain exactly why that happens in the next section, because it's different from a URL problem and needs a different fix.

Wrong show times are almost always a timezone issue, not a bad EPG feed — the XMLTV data is usually in UTC, and your player is supposed to convert it to your device's local timezone automatically. When that conversion doesn't happen, see the timezone fix in the troubleshooting section below.

Here's the mechanic almost nobody explains: your EPG feed doesn't match channels by name, it matches by a channel ID tag hidden in the playlist file (something like `tvg-id="espn.us"`). The XMLTV guide data carries the exact same ID for each program block. If a channel's ID in the playlist doesn't exactly match the ID used in the guide feed — different capitalization, a regional suffix, a renamed channel — the player can't line them up, even though both the playlist and the EPG are working perfectly on their own.

This is why you'll sometimes see 95% of your channels with a full guide and a handful sitting blank: it's not a broken EPG, it's a handful of ID mismatches, usually on regional sports feeds or channels that were recently renamed upstream. There's no user-side fix for a mismatched ID inside the app itself — the ID has to be corrected at the source. If you notice specific channels persistently missing guide data, that's useful information to pass along through support rather than something to keep manually retrying.

This is also why switching players won't fix a channel ID mismatch — TiviMate, Smarters Pro, and native M3U players all use the same tvg-id matching logic under the hood.

If EPG data isn't refreshing at all: check your Firestick's date and time settings first (Settings > My Fire TV > Date & Time) — an incorrect device clock breaks EPG parsing in ways that look exactly like a dead feed. Confirm automatic time zone is enabled rather than a manually set one, since that's the single most common cause of a guide that loads but shows every program starting hours off.

If the schedule is completely blank across all channels (not just a few), re-copy the EPG URL from your account rather than assuming your existing paste is correct — re-typing or re-copying catches the truncated-URL issue that causes this far more often than an actual outage.
